Enterprise UX

“Design can help to improve our lives in the present. Design thinking can help us chart a path into the future.”

― Tim Brown

Leading Google Cloud’s Data Analytics division, I built a robust team that supported a 12+ product portfolio encompassing BigQuery, Streaming Analytics, Data Management, and Machine Learning. This comprehensive suite empowers a diverse user base across various industries to harness the power of data for informed decision-making.

Data Analytics

As the founding UXer, I established the user experience vision for the entire product suite. Through strategic team building, I expanded our capabilities by cultivating a globally distributed, multidisciplinary team of managers, designers, researchers, prototypers, writers, and program managers. This collaborative force was instrumental in closing the gaps and elevating the overall user experience across our product portfolio.

BigQuery

Migration

My initial responsibility was to plot a course and direct the transition from the standalone legacy BigQuery UI into the integrated Cloud Console UI, based on the Material for Enterprise design system.

As a legacy product and the crown jewel of the Data Analytics business, BigQuery had a large and loyal customer base whose business relied on its reliability for existing functionality and the expectation of new feature releases. This demanded a thoughtful approach not only to the design elements but also to the process by which we understood the customers, responded to their needs, tested, iterated, validated, and released.

Legacy

Material for Enterprise

BigQuery's unique challenges in handling massive, complex datasets required a design solution beyond standard enterprise patterns and components. By focusing on purpose, I designed and led the implementation of custom productivity and visualization components that expanded our common library and aligned technical needs, business goals, and competing product roadmaps.

BigQuery Studio

Beyond the migrated BigQuery, an essential question remained: What does a “Better BigQuery” look like?

To establish a clear vision, I delved deep into understanding our product roadmap and existing user base and identified a critical overlooked segment: data analysts. In order to expand understanding to an emergent user group, I spearheaded a methodology and staffed a team that complemented our traditional feature driven development process. This involved creating a parallel track dedicated to exploring, testing, and validating innovative future forward product direction.

By proactively identifying and vetting desirable features well in advance of implementation, we empowered our cross-functional team to align product strategy with the evolving needs of our users, ensuring BigQuery remained at the forefront of the industry.

Dataplex

End to End Innovation

Leveraging the success and trust built with BigQuery, I expanded our user centric approach across the entire Data Analytics portfolio. By prioritizing user needs and aligning them with evolving business objectives, the team set a standard for cohesive experiences while driving innovation and increasing customer satisfaction. As product ambitions expanded into data lakes, fabrics, and governance, UX played a pivotal role in applying proven methodologies to new domains, culminating in groundbreaking products likeDataplex.
